Certain aspects I looked for in the good trucking companies that I applied to were as follows.

1. Reliable and fair pay for work performed.

2. Treating the driver like they are an actual human and not a piece of meat.

3. Hometime requests being honored as much as possible.

4. Good reliable trucks that are maintained and not rolling pieces of junk both inside and out.

5. If you have to deal with a dispatcher, find one who is personable and not a jerk.

6. For a company driver, finding the benefits package that will add to your overall satisfaction.

This is just a small list of some things to look out for. There are so many aspects of the job and variables, the list can get pretty long. I like working for a company that has reliable pay, something you can count on like clockwork and not worry about being able to pay bills on time. Having to worry about whether or not you will have anything left after deductions is not a good thing. Drivers have enough to worry about out here  without having the payroll department totally mess up your bill schedule and cause issues with your creditors and above all, your family.

Do some research on your own. Doing a search for the trucking company name and reading anything you find and gauging your next move as to when or if you plan to put in an application for them. If there is a truck stop nearby, you can ask drivers from the target company whether or not they like where they are right now. You may get a mixed bag of reviews, so put it in perspective.

Going with a trucking company that has been around for some years gives you an advantage. There will be some information out there on the net to search for. Call them up and ask about an application package. Ask to speak with a recruiter, and also ask to speak with one of the dispatchers if you can. Find out if you are going to try for a regional job or go long haul. Asking some questions to more than one person will give a better overview of the company you are interested in.

The whole idea of asking these questions ahead of time is to try and determine if this would be a place you would spend years of your life and build a good job history. I have not job jumped and it has paid off in dividends for me. I get a much better response when I talk about years spent at a company, it builds trust in your word and trust in your job performance. They know that you are not going to just up and quit when the going gets a bit rough like it did this past year with freight rates going down the toilet. I stayed the course and rode out the bad rates at the same company. It has paid off for my wife and myself, rates are back to pre-crash levels for the most part.

There are going to be a few small things that may not go your way at any company. It’s just a matter of working through these small wrinkles and continue working and trying to help work with the staff there to do the best you can. Being able to work through the small problems will also show the employer that you are a professional and willing to work with them. Getting upset over every difficulty that comes your way will label you as a problem. Staying away from this label can help with long term employment.

Planning to stay for the long term and setting goals is also a huge help with planning your employment term. Long term as well as medium and short term goals should something you set and do not stray from. One long term goal may be running a million miles and getting that accident free status. This is very honorable and many have achieved this, you just have to set your goals. Right from the start, having a clear path to long term employment at one company is something that is somewhat rare in this industry. You can be different and set your own life pattern from the start. If you plan well and stay at one job for years, there is personal satisfaction that goes along with this.

Plan well, do your homework and find that one golden place that has more pluses in the column than negatives. They may not all be the most perfect choice, but if you pick correctly, then you have years of stable income ahead.

I have been running the shaeffer oil products in two trucks that I have owned, and I see a huge difference in how they perform and sound when running down the road. Working together, both the gulf coast filter system and shaeffer oil have proven to be a winning combination for me.

I first heard of shaeffer oil some years ago from some old hands at the trucking business. They said they have been using this product for a long time and I should take a look at converting my truck over to it. I was really interested in getting my truck to run better and last longer, so I went and visited a dealer who was able to show me what I needed to do to do the conversion.

First, they had to drain all the old oil and let it sit for awhile letting all the old oil drip out. They changed my filters and we started to fill the engine with the shaeffer oil. We also did a first time addition of the moly treatment, this stuff was so thick it took an hour for a gallon to pour into the motor. The moly is used to add the extra treatment needed to make the conversion work better.

I was advised to run the oil to a regular oil change interval at first. I did this and went in for my next change. I was able to run my first truck at longer intervals as time went on, until I sold it and went with a newer truck. This is where the gulf coast filter came in to the picture. I converted my newer truck at about 225,000 miles. The truck now has 800,000 miles on it and the oil pressure remains at 62 pounds in my freightliner classic with a c-15 cat motor. I have had no trouble at all running the same oil for a year or more. I just do the gulf coast filter changes at what would be considered a normal change interval of 30,000 miles on a synthetic blend oil.

The gulf coast filter allows me to change just the filter both in the engine itself or O.E.M. filter, and the gulf coast. I then add the oil back to normal dipstick level and roll on. It soaks up about 2.5 gallons along with the engine filter of one gallon. This adds new oil to the system and keeps things running fresh.

I also use the shaeffer diesel treat fuel treatment product along with their better quality grease for the truck chassis. All of these products combined have helped with fuel economy along with extending the life of the engine and the oil. On a recent overhead, the mechanic did note how clean my engine was inside. Deposits are reduced and parts seem to last longer. I notice a huge difference when I use the diesel treat. Without it, I notice a power loss and sputter from crappy fuel out here.

Ask any owner op who has had their truck awhile, and they will know every sound the engine makes and how their power is supposed to be. Take away or change anything, and they will notice right away. I would not be without these products, they help me stay running and profitable in this economy.

There is a shortage of housing, but the work is here if you can find any. I see a lot of people using motor homes and fifth wheel trailers to live in year round. This can be a rough area to live in when Winter comes, but the pay is really good. 18 to 20 bucks an hour to start, and they need all kinds of skills here. You can find work up here and not just for trucking. They need truckers or people willing to drive the local routes, you just have to have the cdl to get hired.

They move drilling mud or slurry, waste products to and from well sites. All kinds of work here to be had. I see the people that are here, they have money in their pockets and seem happy to have work. I would look on the net and do some searching for company information on who is up here. It is hard for me to see all the names, but I bet they are listed on the net.

Go with some of the big names like Haliburton, and different drilling companies. When I came to the top of the hill outside of town a few miles, all I could see was the methane fires for burnoff of the waste gasses. The fires were like a beacon to guide me to where I needed to be.

I have delivered to Williston, Watford City, Stanley and most of the towns in the northwest corner of North Dakota here. The oil rigs are all over the place, many way off the beaten path on miles of gravel roads. Oil field work may be a tough job, but the pay makes it worth the trouble in this economy. I may be putting a plugin on my blog here that will let all of you out there ask me direct questions about how to find a good truck driving school. I plug Sage only because I took a refresher course there myself after being off duty for a few years. The insurance company required me to pass a few tests. I found that students who were new and had attended the Sage truck driving school showed a higher skill level for the job right out of the gate.

I no longer train drivers, I got burned out after 8 plus years of doing that. I can still give general advice I feel to anyone who asks for it. I am solo now ans am enjoying the solace of having the whole truck to myself again. I spent so many years running team miles that my health was taking a hit, and I had survived those years with no accidents and none of my students having any either. I felt I was lucky. Time for a break and don’t press your luck I thought.

Many of  my old students still call, I had a call last month from a former student who checked on me. I think it’s a good feeling to know that I was able to help somebody and actually have them check on me even years later. I have met former students at truck stops around the country. It is nice to hear your comments. Most of them had attended a good truck driving school, but some had not. They needed real help in getting started and their skill levels were really poor. I had to wear two hats, driving instructor and driver trainer, there is a big difference.

I learned early on that I had to be able to shift the truck left handed from the passenger seat, that is a skill that came to me out of  an emergency, I have had to “grab a gear” more than once with the student failing to find one on a grade or just being tired and frustrated. I also learned how to teach shifting with the student using the throttle and I showing him which gear to select by engine sound. I would run the shifter while he ran the engine rpm’s to the correct level. This example helped him realize the engines role in gear selection along with road speed.

The bottom line is this, I use these examples of what I saw from end of the training over the road. I have seen many come to me with little or no skills taught to them by these truck driving schools. It is extremely important to select a school that will give you good baseline skills to get your feet planted firmly on the ground. A good trainer will be able to identify your shortcomings and work on those, but, basic shifting should be already there. We as trainers are usually supposed to polish what skills you have, not teach those from the start.

There are many things the truck driving schools will not teach. They have set ways and say that is how it is on the job. I will say right here that many things they say is gospel, is not accurate. I have many trainees say “that’s what they told me”. I say let a trainer show the real world way of doing things. Have an open mind when you get in the truck. Be ready to be flexible and learn, don’t just think because a trainer has a different way of doing something that it is wrong. He or she will have learned from experience.

I has set formulas for backing. I also know that any “formula” had better have a plan b and c and so on. There is always room for being flexible, but follow the basic formula and adjust it for the individual setting. In a good truck driving school, they will work you on real world backing situations. Having you back in both sight side and blind side. After 10 years or so, you will have a good idea what you can do when backing. But I must stress this one last point. I will always look at the space I am backing into, I get out of the truck and look for myself. Do not take it for granted. It is your responsibility and nobody else.
